How to add a new file or directory to Handy Backup.

Step 1

Check the available space in your account.

Step 2

Find the size of the file or directory that you wish to add to Handy Backup. This is important as your storage space has a limit and some directories can be quite large. You will use Windows Explorer to find the file or directory size.

Load windows explorer and select the file or directory.

Right-click on the selected file or directory and select properties.

Note the file size from the information window. (88.9MB

In this example the directory (or file folder) is roughly 90MB. If not enough space is available call Backup Ranger Consulting to increase your storage space.

IMPORTANT:  Please note that huge files or directories may show in Gigabytes or GB. To convert 1GB equals 1000MB. As well, smaller files or directories may show in Kilobytes or KB. To convert 1MB equals 1000KB.

Step 3

Now that we know we have enough storage space we will load Handy Backup and make the change. Start Handy Backup on the computer and select the backup item.

Right-Click on the backup item and select properties. A small window will open, select the Backup Set tab. You should see a window like the one below.

Now click on the Add button. This will bring up a window that is similar to your Windows Explorer Interface. Use this interface to select the file or directory.

Now select the file or directory, in our example it is My Documents, then click on OK to close the Browse Window and then click on OK to close the Backup Item Properties window. Next exit from Handy Backup. You are finished. Handy Backup will automatically add your new file or directory to your backup list.

Backing up Netscape

Netscape stores user's Address Book and Bookmarks on the hard drive of their computer. However these 2 files can be copied or backed up to other systems.

1. Your bookmarks are stored in a file called:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\users\profile name\bookmark.htm

2. Your address book is stored in a file called:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\users\profile name\pab.na2

The 'profile name' is the name of your Netscape profile
(usually your name). The actual pathway location may be different on some machines but most should have the standard Monash Installation.

To backup, use Handy Backup and select each file for backup.

Backup Outlook PST files

The Personal Folder file (.pst / PST) is the place where Outlook stores its data (when you're using Outlook without Microsoft® Exchange Server). Each Personal Folder file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You may have a single .pst file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), and you may also have an additional .pst file that you use to archive messages (named "Archive Folders"). By backing up these PST files you will be backing up all your Outlook information . The hard part is locating the files. You can use the Windows search utility to search for *.pst files, or see hints below. Remember to select the 'search hidden files and folders' check box. Note the location of the PST files and add these files to your backup item.

Outlook data is usually stored at the following paths:

Backup Outlook Express data files

Microsoft Outlook Express stores your email, newsletter and contact information is a single folder. Within this folder there are individual database files (*.dbx) for each folder contained in Outlook Express. For example, there will exist an Inbox.dbx, an Outbox.dbx, a Contacts.dbx and a variety of others including any new folders that you have created using Outlook Express (if you created a "Friends" folder there will be a corresponding Friends.dbx file). By backing up these database files you will be backing up all your Outlook information . The hard part is locating the files. You can locate the folder containing these files by opening Outlook Express and clicking on Tools > Options. Next, click on the Maintenance Tab and then on the "Store Folder" button. You will be presented with a "Store Location" window displaying the path to the folder containing the database files. This is the folder that you will want to backup with Handy Backup.

Backup Eudora email

Depending on your version of Windows and your configuration, Eudora can keep your messages, address book data and settings in one of many different places. If you want to back up or copy them, you first need to identify your Eudora folder. To find your Eudora folder on Windows use the Windows search function to search for the file eudora.ini. If you get only one result, the folder containing eudora.ini is your Eudora folder. If there are multiple folders containing eudora.ini, you have to open them all to identify "your" Eudora folder. Look for .mbx files and .fol folders that match your setup of mailboxes in Eudora. Backup all files with the extension ".mbx", the file "descmap.pce" as well as all folders with names ending in ".fol".

Backup AOL email

Save the contents of the Personal Filing Cabinet to disk or a back-up folder on the hard-drive. For those of you who remain with AOL, saving a backup of your PFC can save you hard drive space (your system can get sluggish if you have too much stuff in your PFC). Here's what to do:

Open AOL, click "Email" on the toolbar, then select "Personal Filing Cabinet". You can also access your PFC off-line by selecting "Customise" on the toolbar and then "Personal Filing Cabinet". On the list of folders, right-click on the very top folder (normally called Email) and select "Save Folder As..." from the pop-up menu. Browse to find the required location where you want to save the file and select a name for it that you'll remember. Don't use your screen-name as the file name—this could really mess things up. Click Save . Follow this same procedure for any sub-folders in your PFC. This should also work with your "Favorite Places" folder.

Backup other files

You may need to do some research on where files are saved. One good way to do this is to open up the program in question, create a temporary file and when you save the file do a 'Save as', this will prompt you to where the default location of where the program saves its files.
